Sharks at Ras Mohamed Now to our favorite topic about Ras Mohamed. Yes it is the sharks that are the most intriguing thing about this place. They are mean-looking, they are graceful, they are slender and they are everywhere here. When people think sharks, they usually think Great Barrier Reef, South Africa, Cuba, and Florida. There is however no place where are there are more sharks, and such diversity of species as could be found in the Red Sea. This again, is because of the nutrient rich warm tropical waters found here that attract this amazing creature. The fact that the reef walls rise so abruptly at such vertical angles from the deep is the reason why you can see large numbers of sharks at very close distances from the shore. Almost anywhere else in the world you would need to go for a good two hours in a boat to see what you can see here with your feet almost dry on Terra Firma !
If the lion is the king of the jungle, than the shark is the uncontested master of the seas. In fact this has been the case for 400 million years. A long, long time before man made his first appearance on this planet. Yes, the shark is a very ancient creature who has evolved in to perfection as a super predator at the top of the food chain. Made of flexible cartilage instead of bone, the shark's sleek, aerodynamic body is designed to move with stealth across the water to trap and crush its prey. With sonar and electro magnetic receptors conveniently located in its smooth skin, the shark is more like a seek-and-destroy machine than it is a fish. It is however the razor-sharp saw like teeth in its comparatively large jaws that give it its unnecessary notorious reputation. Although shark attacks on humans are extremely rare, some people feel this makes it a legitimate target and kill this wonderful creature at will. Ironically, although each of us has a slight fear of sharks, it should really be the shark that fears us most. For the 100 odd shark attacks, of which less than 10% result in human fatalities a year, we kill 100 million. In case you are wondering, this is not a typing error. Humans do kill one hundred million sharks per year. We are a million times more of a threat to it, than it is to us. Now,
since sharks come in all sizes, shapes and colors you probably are wondering what you will expect to see in the waters of Ras Mohamed. Since the Red Sea is really just an extension of the Indian Ocean, most of the shark species found in that tropical ocean occur here too. However, with the opening of the Suez Canal, the sharks of the Mediterranean, where Great whites have been seen, can also be found here. Basically, a very large variety of reef and pelagic sharks species will be waiting for you in the waters of Ras Mohamed, if you are lucky.
